The vice (schraubstock) as a common workshop assistant

A vise serves as a device for attaching different construction pieces. All vise variants have a fixed and a free-moving jaw. In the area between these jaws their building piece is tightened. The original jaws are usually interchangeable, so they can be replaced in the event of damage or jamming of sensitive building materials.

Many Schraubstock are made of cast steel and ensure standard accuracy during operation. Vices are mainly used by precision mechanics, carpenters and laymen.

The functional principle of a vise

Your vise is the basic tool on the workbench.

The vise is ultimately a fixture for building components for the period of that processing. For this purpose, the gripping aids offer two opposing jaws, which clamp their piece of construction on two sides. One jaw stands firm while the other jaw moves with the help of a spindle and crank.

What are the most popular vice designs?

There are different types of vices. When purchasing a vice, be aware of its intended use – you need a sturdy model for your workbench or a compact machine vice for machine tools, such as the drill press.

The solid parallel vise seems the most common variant. In this case, the jaws are completely synchronous with each other in any opening width. The same versions are often found online in a vise test. Consequently, wide workpieces can be tightened precisely and firmly. A parallel-opening vice is powered by mere. Such a vise is mounted on a worktop.

Pipe Vise: A pipe vise, often called an installer vise, is convenient to use for round objects, as the required cross-section can be easily adjusted. Here, the tubes are clamped in a balanced manner from all four directions, which largely avoids unwanted deformations on the component.

Miniature vise A mini vise is finely constructed and thus allows the sensitive fixing of easily breakable small components. In addition, these models often have a ball joint, whereby the head of the vice can be locked in all directions. Mini-racks are therefore used especially in the filigree model building sector.

A workbench with a vice can also be found in a well-stocked tool shop on the net. In general, you can even choose whether the vise should have 150 mm or 100 mm wide jaws.

A small cockpit assistant understandably uses less work space than a large model. If your tension helpers are to be height adjustable, they can always be adjusted to the required height or position. A height-adjustable tensioning aid makes working easier, but is also possible.
