There are many consoles available on the market to date, and two newcomers will be arriving soon too. If you are a gamer, then it is right to say that exciting times are here. But, which console should you select? After all, it isn’t always an easy choice anymore. It all comes down to your needs and budget.
Sony are winning the latest console war, the PS4 gaming console has climbed to success and this doesn’t look to change anytime soon. Or, could it? Well, Microsoft’s lacklustre Xbox One offering is about to be refreshed with a new beast, named the Xbox Scorpio. Then, just to confuse you a little more, there will be Nintendo’s Switch introducing very shortly. Don’t worry, we will now simplify things for you.
Do you love fun, colourful games that are unique? Are you not obviously bothered about extreme resolution definitions such as 4k? If this sounds like you, then the Nintendo Switch is ready to be your new console – this is because it ticks all of the boxes. Sure, we still have many things to learn about Nintendo’s new system, but it already has some stunning game releases lined up, such as Super Mario Odyssey, which is expected to bring the best out of the iconic character, Mario. Retailing at $250-300, this is a new console to consider buying. One nagging issue for gamers will be the lack of an Ethernet port though, the need for a Wii U Lan adapter was needed with the previous console, and the same will be required once more for gamers who wish to get a direct connection to their Switch.
Sony PlayStation 4
Do you like the idea of virtual reality? How about a large selection of exclusive games? Is both affordability and power important? Well, then, Sony’s PS4 or PS4 Pro is the option for you. Not only are both of these consoles fully compatible with PSVR, Sony’s virtual reality headset, but you also have the option of 1080p or 4K resolution depending on your desire. Pricing is very reasonable for what is available here. You won’t be disappointed if you select the PlayStation 4 to be your new console. There is even talk of a PS5, which would likely appear much later, but that is very exciting and a good reason to stick with the PlayStation brand for now.
Microsoft Xbox One
The Xbox One has attempted to reform itself and attract additional sales, whilst also incorporating its Windows OS system deeply into the system. To some degree, it has worked. The launch of the Xbox One S has provided some with 4K Blu-ray playability, something the PS4 Pro doesn’t. Also, PS4 backwards compatibility doesn’t actually exist, where as it does on the Xbox One. However, the lack of games is a real problem and nothing appears to be on the horizon. So, we will have to see what the Scorpio is able to bring to the table for Microsoft. If you like power and not too bothered about exclusive games, but like backwards compatible ones, then be sure to prepare for Microsoft’s upcoming beast, which will arrive later this year.
Among these newcomers are the older consoles, that’s not forgetting the handheld ones too. If you enjoy handheld then be sure to go with either the Nintendo Switch or PSVR, as the will team up well with the home console. Finally, you might even want to get a PC or retro console. Whatever you decide, think carefully and enjoy your purchase. Gaming is ready to attract even more as the industry expands.
